Jolly Mom: Book Review

Get Your Kids WAUSSIEFIED!

I know most moms will agree when I say that kids grow up way too fast these days. There are so many outside influences constantly bombarding our kids with mature content--it's almost inevitable. The question is how do we raise our children amidst all of the external influences that are way too often negative? Really, it is as simple as teaching kids the important life lessons: kindness, love, respect, manners, and so on. That's why I have fallen in love with a new series of children’s books entitled The Waussies written by Australian author Jacqui Taub.

The Waussies are a group of six whimsical, brightly colored characters from Australia, all created and illustrated by Taub. Each of the Waussies are featured in their own book, with accompanying CD. Each book features a story that delivers similar messages of kindness and acceptance through fun and humorous situations. The attached CD introduces The Waussie Song, with its own special message of never giving up, even if things are difficult.

Book Excerpt: The Waussies believe in kindness, good health, fun, and laughter--especially at themselves! And, Waussies never give up, even if the problem seems difficult.

Taub began writing The Waussies series over 25 years ago, and has incorporated many messages into the books including:

  • The meaning of manners - Why a "thank you" or "please" can mean more to others than we think
  • A kernel of kindness - The smallest acts of kindness can be a gift to others, and yourself
  • The power of patience - Both children and parents should take the time to listen and understand what other say and feel
  • A message of motivation - Don’t be afraid to reach for the stars and accomplish your dreams, no matter how big or small you (or your dreams) may be
  • The secret to success - Success isn’t marked by accomplishing a goal. You succeed the minute you begin trying

We were sent Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups to review and it is such a cute story. In the book Hiccup Waussie has a bad case of the hiccups and his friends help him get rid of them. It's a story about friendship and never giving up with lots of laughs in between. Very cute!

The Waussies series has been written for children ages 3-7 and includes the following titles: Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue, Tennis Racquet Waussie’s Space Adventure, Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun, Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper, Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups, and Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem.

The Wonderful Aussie Waussies

The Waussies are 100 per cent Aussies. The colourful characters were once called Wacky Aussies. That was until their tongues became totally twisted trying to say it all the time that they shortened their name to Waussies! The Waussies are all about being happy and helpful, kind and caring and positive all the time . . . even when things appear difficult.

Best of all, if you hang around the Waussies for a while, their wonderfully Waussie attitudes might just rub off on you, leading you to be kinder, more helpful and ready to give all sorts of things a go. The Waussies like to call this – being Waussified!

The Waussies’ book series, aims to teach youngsters about being kind and thoughtful and to do good deeds. The cute characters use simple language lessons to teach good manners all the while entertaining readers with their fun and exciting escapades.

There are six Waussie books in the All-Aussie Waussie series to collect.

Waussie storybooks are available now. Suit young readers, aged five.

1. Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue
Ant is stuck inside a big bubble. Hiccup Waussie, riding on Worm’s back, tries to save his friend from the bubble as it travels to some fascinating places . . . including a seal pen and over the ocean. Let’s hope Ant can be saved before the bubble bursts!

2. Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper
Uh oh! Beachball Waussie is losing his air! He is getting smaller and smaller. Icecream Waussie sees her friend disappearing so she puts him in her basket and heads out in search of a stopper. And, where they find the Waussie-saving stopper is a pretty peculiar place.

3. Tennis Racquet Waussie’s Space Adventure
A game of tennis turns sour when Tennis Racquet Waussie’s strings get plunked. Now they are sticking out all over the place. With the help of Spaceman Waussies’ helmet and a snooze in the spaceship, Tennis Racquet Waussie soon finds himself in the middle of an outer space adventure.

4. Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun
How can you be a Burger Waussie without a bun? Burger Waussie has lost his bun and can not find anything suitable to keep him warm. Lettuce, banana skin, a drink of tomato sauce . . . nothing is quite the same as his bun. Does Mr Tortoise hold the answer?

5. Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups
After blowing up balloons all day, Hiccup Waussie still has hiccups. He blows one balloon so big that he is lifted off the ground and only returns when it pops! The fright takes Hiccup Waussie’s hiccups away, but when he reads a funny note he laughs so much that the hiccups return again.

6. Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem
Everyone keeps pulling and tickling Pineapple Waussie’s prickles which makes him chuckle so much that he cries pineapple juice tears. If he keeps this up, does that mean he will run out of juice?

I was recently sent a set of books featuring the adventures of the Waussies (Wacky Aussies, but their tongues kept getting twisted, so they shortened it!) I read

  • Tennis Racquet Waussie's Space Adventure
  • Boomerang Waussie To The Rescue
  • Beachball Waussie's Lost Air Stopper
  • Hiccup Waussie Loses his Hiccups
  • Pineapple Waussie's Tickly Problem
  • Burger Waussie's Lost Bun

Written an illustrated by Australian Jacqui Taub (pictured above), and dedicated to her 13 grandchildren, the books are aimed at 3-7 year olds (though I think their themes and quality will make them useful right up to the end of Key Stage 2), the books are colourful, engaging and encourage good manners, kindness, patience, motivation, perseverance and and teamwork.

Each book comes with an audio CD including a dramatic reading of the story and the Waussie song.

They're perfect for reading out loud and starting discussions and are available from Amazon.

With The Guardian today reporting on a study of 300 teachers by Oxford University Press, showing that many children start school never having been read a story, there's no better time to get to know the fantastic Waussies.

It’s easy to see that America’s children are growing up faster than ever before. Most believe this is a result of increasing technology available to children of all ages, exposing them to mature content and, sometimes, violence.

THE SMASH HIT CHILDREN'S SERIES FROM AUSTRALIA IS HERE!

WHAT’S A WAUSSIE, YOU ASK? WHY IT’S A WACKY AUSSIE!
--New children’s series brings families back to the basics
with some help from "down under"

  • The meaning of manners - Why a “thank you” or “please” can mean more to others than we think

In reading the series and getting to know the Waussies, Taub hopes that all children, and parents, will become “WAUSSIEFIED!,” where doing good deeds and never giving up, even if things are difficult, will be part of their daily mindset.

The Waussies series has been written for children ages 3-7 and includes the following titles: Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue, Tennis Racquet Waussie’s Space Adventure, Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun, Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper, Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups, and Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem.

Jacqui Taub, a native Australian, has been writing since the age of 5. After marrying and starting a family, Taub’s doodling and nonsensical verse led to the birth of a group of Wacky Aussies, which would later be shortened to The Waussies, six fun-loving, whimsical characters who teach children about the importance of kindness, being polite, and having fun. Although The Waussies series was a smash-hit with Australian children, Taub decided to devote her time to her young children and put The Waussies on hold. Almost 25 years later and inspired to share the story with her 13 grandchildren, as well as children and parents all over the world, she has revived The Waussies series. Taub lives with her supportive and loving husband and visits her children and grandchildren residing around the world as often as possible.

As the mother of young children, I’m always on the lookout for new and exciting books to tempt my kids away from television and video games. Luckily my kiddos have inherited my passion for the written word, but it always helps when the books are fun to read and look at.

Author and illustrator Jacqui Taub was kind enough to send me a set of her newly released books based on a series of characters she developed called The Waussies:

The Waussies were born in Australia. They were once called Wacky Aussies; but their tongues became twisted when they tried to say it, so they shortened it to Waussies.

The Waussies believe in being kind, good health, having fun, and laughing, especially at themselves! And Waussies never give up, even if the problem seems a little difficult.

Once you get to know the Waussies and follow in their footsteps, being kind, helping each other, laughing at your mistakes and keep on trying – you, too, will become Waussiefied!

Taub herself is the mother of four and grandmother to 13 grandchildren. She’s been writing freelance since the 1970’s and came up with The Waussies more than 25 years ago. Only after her grandchildren were born did she decide to dig out the old drawings and begin to form a series of books out of them. The result has been a labor of love–six fun books that were created by a grandmother to entertain and teach her own grandchildren as well as yours:

The books are designed to engage kids ages 3-7, and each one includes an audio CD which narrates the story and includes The Waussie Song. Illustrated with whimsical characters and scenes using brilliant, vibrant colors these books are certain to capture the attention of a new reader.

The Waussies are available in the US, UK, New Zealand and Australia. You can also find them on Amazon.com.

I love reading with my boys. Its a quiet, quality time that we don't get enough of, but when we can steal the time away it is great to snuggle up and read a book together. Recently I had the opportunity to check out a collection of six amazing childrens books with my boys and we all fell in love with the stories, the characters and the colorful illustrations inside these books!

We've been Waussified!

The Waussies are a bunch of Wacky Aussies who couldn't say their name and thus they became the Waussies! The Waussies come in all kinds but one thing is true about every Waussie character... they love to help, be kind and have fun!

The books in the Waussies Collection include...

Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue
Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper
Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun
Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups
Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem
Tennis Racquet Waussie’s Space Adventure

Each of the Waussie books is full of colorful illustrations that are sure to grab your child's attention right away. The Author of the series Jacqui Taub also illustrated her lovely characters. She even shows you how to draw the Wuassies on the Waussies website.

Every book features the Waussies working together to solve a problem. Wuassie's never give up! One of my favorite things about these wonderful stories are all of the fun sound words that I got to act out for my children. They really got a kick out it!

Each Waussie Book includes its very own audio reading of the book on cd tucked into a sleeve inside the back cover.

The audio version is fun to listen to, as you follow along while the story is being read. Each of the CD's also feature the wonderful Waussie's theme song!

My boys are ages 2-9 years old and they all enjoyed reading about the Waussie's adventures and listening to the books on the audio cd as well. My youngest son runs around saying Waussie! Waussie! Waussie! and I know its time to read! The Waussie Collection of books are perfect for young readers, and even Mommy too! I really enjoy the Waussie Series and am glad to call them my own.

The Waussie Collection of books is available on Amazon.com and are coming to bookstores near you this month! Check out the Waussie Website for more information on their availability!

The Adventure of Motherhood's Feed Me Books Friday Book Review
To view: Because Babies Grow Up

Today I'm excited to share a series with you about some Wacky Aussies.

The Waussies are a cute set of characters created by Jacqui Taub for her grandchildren. She wanted to share stories with them that teach values like kindness, good health, as well as fun and laughter. There's Hiccup Waussie (Sammi's favorite), Boomerang Waussie (my favorite), Burger Waussie, Beachball Waussie and a bunch more. The Waussies even have their own song! Give the chorus a listen. (With video at the Waussie website) Pretty cute, huh?

The Waussie Series

There are six books in the series. We've read and enjoyed them all. Each one comes with a CD that contains the Waussie Song and a dramatized reading of the book. Each character has a different voice which I think enhances the listening experience. Sammi loves to listen to the CDs while looking at the books and often prefers to hear them rather than to have me read them.

Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups

In this book, Hiccup Waussies friends try to help him get rid of his hiccups. They have some pretty creative ideas and I love Ant's take on why he's got them at all. (The air isn't staying out.) Beach Ball Waussie invites Hiccup Waussie to jog with him to help his breathing. Ant suggests blowing up balloons the keep the air out.

Other Titles in the Series

* Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue
* Tennis Racquet Waussie's Space Adventure
* Burger Waussie's Lost Bun
* Beachball Waussie's Lost Air Stopper
* Pineapple Waussie's Tickly Problem

Overall, I think these books are really fun. The characters are unique and captivating. Sammi is having a lot of fun recognizing the characters again in each book. Jacqui has created a great community of friends and you feel a part of that community as you read the books. The lessons they teach are subtle so it's not too preachy, but they make for great discussions as you help your little one draw the lesson out of the story.

Aside from her own grandchildren, Jacqui has worked with children and loves the interaction of being with little children. This love is evident in her books and CDs. We were surprised when the CD reading of the book didn't have a ding to say when to turn the page. That was a little difficult when in the car because we couldn't see the pages to help Sammi. But when we cuddled up on the couch to listen, it definitely kept us both engaged in the story and the experience of reading together. When I asked her about it, Jacqui said she left it out intentionally because "it's more encouragement for mums to sit with the children and help them read along." I was definitely encouraged!

Children's Book Series That Teaches Kindness to Others Book Review
Part 1 - To view: Andrea Coventry

The Waussies are a new group of crazy characters designed to help children become more kind toward others.

Waussie is short for Whacky Aussies, the crazy new characters developed by Jacqui Taub. In her six-book series of picture books, children are introduced to characters who make absolutely no sense together and get themselves into the strangest situations. Yet these child-tested books are child-approved, with their funny-sounding accents (at least to American children!), weird antics, and uber-catchy song that will creep up on you when you least expect it. Meet three of the Waussies.

Tennis Racket Waussie

Tennis Racket Waussie's special story is "Tennis Racquet Waussie's Space Adventure" [Waussie Productions, Ltd., 2010]. When he gets klunked between the eyes with a tennis ball, all of his strings go PLUNK!. His friend Spaceship Waussie tries to cheer him up by taking him on a ride on a spaceship to meet the Boopas in Boopaland. Boopas like to play Boopa Ball, using boopa bats that grow out of their heads. Their boopa bats resemble Tennis Racket Waussie's plunked strings.

They have a grand old time playing Boopa ball. Boomerang Waussie joins them for some fun, then they return to Earth. They are excited to teach the other Waussies about their new friends and sport.

Boomerang Waussie

Boomerang Waussie is featured in "Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue" [Waussie Productions, Ltd, 2010]. He always loves to help his friends out of their sticky situations. This time, Hiccup Waussie is busy blowing bubbles, but accidentally gets their friend Ant stuck inside one. Poor Ant gets bounced around from animal to animal at the zoo, and starts to make his way out to sea.

Tennis Racket tries to save him, but forgets that he can't swim. He is saved by a porpoise, and the two swim to save Ant. Boomerang Waussie manages to fly overhead to pop the bubble that is imprisoning Ant and brings him safely back to dry land, where he profusely thanks his friends.

Beachball Waussie

Beachball Waussie is feeling a little deflated in his book, "Beachball Waussie's Lost Air Stopper" [Waussie Productions, Ltd., 2010]. He lost his stopper when playing boopa ball with Boopa, and now his air is hissing out. His friends Ice Cream Waussie and Spike quickly try to find something to plug him up, so that he doesn't complete deflate.

Spike offers up a quill, but that is not big enough. Boomerang Waussie, always coming to the rescue, is able to fill Beachball Waussie back up with air, then plugs him with his finger until they can get to the dentist for a filling. At the dentist, they run into Ant and Hiccup Waussie, who end up plugging Boomerang Waussie's hole in a most unusual way.

The Waussie stories are definitely among some of the most bizarre in children's literature. Yet, when they were tested on a group of children ages 3-6, the children went crazy for them. Adding to the books are audio CDs, read by Jacqui Taub, that also include the Waussie theme song. Find out more about them, as well as viewing videos, at the Waussie Productions website.

Children's Book Series That Teaches Kindness to Others Book Review -
Part II - To view: Andrea Coventry

Waussie is short for Wacky Aussies. Children learn kindness toward others with these crazy characters.

Jacqui Taub first came up with the idea for her Wacky Aussie stories over 25 years ago, when she told them to her own children. Now, she has created a six-book set for a new generation. Complete with audio CDs of her reading the stories, as well as a Waussie theme song, these child-tested books will delight children in preschool and kindergarten. Meet three of the Waussies.

Hiccup Waussie

Hiccup Waussie's problem comes in "Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups". He is famous for having a lot of hiccups, but on this day they are particularly bad. Boomerang Waussie and Beachball Waussie try to take him jogging. Ant tries to have him blow them out by blowing up balloons.

When a balloon that he is blowing bursts, Hiccup Waussie is frightened into losing his hiccups. He has a moment of clarity. Then, as he is laughing, they quickly return, and he is back to where he started!

Pineapple Waussie

Pineapple Waussie is featured in "Pineapple Waussie's Tickly Problem"

He is covered in many prickles, that are so appealing, everyone keeps touching them. But as they tug on his prickles, it tickles him! When getting tickled, he laughs so much that he cries pineapple tears, and now runs the risk of being dehydrated.

When Pineapple Waussie starts hiding to prevent people from tickling him, the other Waussies offer their assistance. Burger Waussie offers ketchup. Boomerang Waussie takes him to see the barber. The barber fixes him up so that he has cool, new sharp prickles. These new prickles no longer tickle. They hurt the offender! Which is amusing to Pineapple Waussie, who begins to laugh, and starts to run out of pineapple tears again. Burger Waussie

Burger Waussie's dilemma comes about in "Burger Waussie's Lost Bun". Somehow, when taking a rest, his bun has disappeared! Now he is cold! Hot Dog Waussie offers to share part of his bun, and Ant props him up, to help him on his quest to find his bun.

He searches on top of a garbage can, but finds nothing. His friends offer him a piece of lettuce, a piece of whole-meal bread, a banana skin, but all he really wants is his own bun. Finally after searching everywhere, they find it sitting on the back of a tortoise, and Burger Waussie is happy again.

These stories sound crazy and weird, and that is because they are. But when children listen to them with the audio CDs, narrated by Jacqui Taub, and accompanied by the Waussie theme song, the children are engrossed and happy. Follow up the Waussie stories by discussing how the friends helped each other, and how children can also help each other. Also, check out other Waussie fun on the Waussie Productions website.

Magdalena Ball Book Review
To view: Preschool Entertainment

Do you know what a Waussie is? Once upon a time, Waussies were called Wacky Aussies, but Waussies are a lot easier to say. Their funny little cartoon characters who like to play and help one another. Their main aim is to teach young children manners, but your kids won't notice that. Instead they'll notice the bright colours of author and illustrator Jacqui Taub's cartoons, the fun loving, easy to read text, and the combination of kooky and familiar situations that the Waussies get themselves into.

The books have been designed for children raging in age from 3 to 7--and there are six books in the series altogether. Boomerang Waussie to the Rescue, ISBN 978-965-91455-1-5, is the story of an ant stuck inside a bubble. Tennis Racquet Waussie's Space Adventure, ISBN 978-965-01455-0-8, is the story of how one of the Waussies gets his strings plunked and ends up in outer space playing with aliens (who happen to look like tennis balls, sort of), Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper, ISBN: 978-965-91455-5-3, is the story of how a Waussie lost his stopper and nearly deflated. Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun, ISBN: 978-965-91455-3-9, is the story of how a Waussie lost his bun and had to share one with a hotdog friend, Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups, ISBN: 978-965-91455-2-2, is all about how to get rid of the hiccups, and Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem, ISBN: 978-965-91455-4-6, is about some prickly tickles. As the last book suggests, there is plenty of wordplay, and the stories all focus on caring for others in strife. While your child probably won't run out of air, have plucked strings, or get his or her prickles plucked, there are plenty of analogous situations that can be related, and the solutions are all about the value of friends.

Each book comes with its own CD that has the story narrated on it, and the Waussie song. The Waussies make good role models and the vivid, fun books are ones that children will enjoy.

Pragmaticmom.com Book Review

I tried [the Waussies] series out on my kids and my 5-year-old really liked the quirky plots. He said, “I don’t like it, I LOVE IT!” when I asked him what he thought of the books.

If your child likes the Little Miss and Little Mr series, as in Mr. Messy, Mr. Tickle, Little Miss Sunshine, etc., then this series would be a good change of pace. They are similar but the Waussie plots are simpler and there is less text on a page. Another big differentiator from the Little Miss books is that the Waussie books come with a CD that has a catchy song as well as a reading of the book by Australian actors. I thought it was fun to hear an Australian accent. My son liked the catchy song, but books on “tape” are also a great way to teach preschoolers independence by having them play the CD and read along by themselves. The plot lines stress kindness, helping others, and problem solving. The pictures are appealing with bright colors and cartoon-like characters. This is a great book series for any child that I would describe as Little Miss/Mr series crossed with The Wiggles. This sweet spot for this series is preschoolers, ages 2-5.

The 6 book series consists of: Burger Waussie’s Lost Bun, Tennis Racquet Waussie’s Space Adventure, Beachball Waussie’s Lost Air Stopper, Pineapple Waussie’s Tickly Problem, Hiccup Waussie Loses His Hiccups, and Boomerang Waussie To the Rescue.
